Studies that measure max. RGR in a large number of plant species must often compromise between accuracy of estimation and the number of species that can be studied. Using data from 68 species of wetland plants, including grasses and weeds, it was shown that equivalent accuracy in estimating av. RGR can be obtained by using only aboveground tissues as when using whole plants. The regression of whole-plant RGR (Rw) on aboveground RGR (Ra) was: Rw = -0.003 + 1.017 Ra, r2 = 0.984, SE of the estimate = 0.008. If these results are generally valid then it will be easier to obtain the data necessary to test adequately recent models of community dynamics and structure which include max. RGR as a state variable. |
