Pakistan is a country of 149.03 million people, with an annual population growth rate of 2.1 %. Almost 68 % of population lives in rural areas depending on agro-livestock based economy. The rural poverty has increased from 25 to 39% during the last decade. Several agencies have been working for poverty reduction without any significant success. Due to one or more limitations of integration, skill development and scope. A comprehensive integrated poverty model has therefore been framed to reduce poverty and enhance prosperity in rural areas. A three-pronged strategy of the model includes capacity building of rural men and women for integrated farming system, provision of technical and financially-feasible opportunities and skills for diversified income generating activities, and farm-based direct support interventions to the poorest of the poor. The capacity building module deals with sheep, goat and dairy husbandry, rural poultry, fish, bee keeping, silkworm rearing, backyard vegetable growing, and micro-credit awareness. The technically and financially-feasible interventions include biogas plant, artificial insemination (AI), hatcher/incubator for rural poultry, small feed manufacturing unit, fruit/fodder plants nursery, and livestock based farming. Direct support interventions are based on dairy, sheep, goat and poultry units, small hatcher/ incubator, AI kits and feed manufacturing units along with provision of requisite skill and micro-credit. The Barani Livestock Production Research Institute is actively engaged in the implementation of the first two strategies in the arid zone, in collaboration with the Government and NGOs, whereas direct support interventions have been suggested to agencies involved in funding and execution of poverty reduction programs.
