Infanticide, followed or not by cannibalism, is relatively frequent among mammals and has been reported for species as diverse as lions (Panthera leo: Packer and Pulsey 1982), polar bears (Ursus maritimus: Derocher and Wiig 1999), zebras (Eqqus burchelli: Pluhacek and Bartos 2000), baboons (Papio cynocephalus: Weingrill 2000) and voles (Microtus pennsylvanicus: Ebensperger et al. 2000). Wowever, cannibalism was not mentioned among wild giant otters in the reference works of Duplaix (1980) and Rosa et al. (1999), nor Eisenberg (1989), Redford and Eisenberg (1992) or Emmons (1990), althought it is known to happen in captivity (Carter and Rosas 1997). Schweizer (1992) observed an antagonistic encouter of two adult males resulting in the death of the looser, but cannibalism was not reported. Until we know, this is the first report of this behavior for free-living giant otters and the first time this is documented in video. |
