Oats were grown in two fields on an organic farm in the Annapolis County, Nova Scotia. In one field (A5) the effects of N, P and N plus P on the growth and yield of oats and their rhizosphere microrganisms were studied. In the second field (A1) the effect of N fertilization on final biomass and grain yield and on the rhizosphere microrganisms was studied. There was no fertilizer effect in the grain yield. However, significant effects on growth parameters were observed. In addition, there was a large difference in the yield of oats in these two fields. Oats grown in field A5 had high yields and oats grown in field A1 had low yields. The numbers of rhizosphere bacteria were also several orders of magnitude larger in the rhizosphere of oats grown in field A5.Whenthe most abundant bacterial isolates from these two groups of plants were morphologically compared they were shown to be distinct. I was reasoned that the rhizosphere of the high-yielding oats might be enriched for bacteria which benefit plant growth while the rhizosphere of low-yielding oats might be enriched for bacteria which inhibit plant growth. Inoculation trials with these two groups of bacteria were carried out in the laboratory under axenic conditions and in the field. The inoculation of a mixture of organisms from high-yielding oats and of mixture of organisms from low-yielding oats did not cause any significant effect on the growth and yield of oats. Similarly, inoculation of 22 organisms from each of these two groups of bacteria on oats grown ... MenosOats were grown in two fields on an organic farm in the Annapolis County, Nova Scotia.
