PRESENTATION
The importance of humic substances and natural organic matter (NOM) in the soil and water environment is very well known. Extensive research is needed in relation to its structure and role in soil and water processes, demanding endevour of scientists from different areas. So it was a great satisfaction for us at the Brazilian Chapter of International Humic Substances Society (IHSS) to work in lhe organization of our XIIIHSS meeting.
The preparation began two years ago just after the Assembly decision of IHSS in Boston, during the 20th year of IHSS Conference. Several steps were superposed moreover, it is a great satisfaction to identify the amount of participants and those interested in attending this meeting in the city of Sao Pedra, State of Sao Paulo, southwest region of Brazil. In the bucolic Colina Verde Farm Hotel we hope to attain an atmosphere for a productive and enthusiastic meeting.
The decision of the Organizing Committee, algo approved by IHSS Board, the congress was divided in ten Symposia on major themes regarding NOM and humic substances research, as carbon sequestration, ecological functions, organic agriculture, aquatic reactions, structural aspects, soil amendment and remediation, commercial applications, interactions with xenobiotics, tropical soils, and water treatment. Thus, the conference will include lectures and oral presentation from scientists worldwide, most of them active members of IHSS, including around 260 contributions. Also very important, will be the presentations of award bursary students with two oral sessions devoted to them.
Moreover I would like to mention that the organizing could not have been possible without strong effort of lhe Organizing Committee, algo the effective support of Scientific Committee and IHSS Board, and from local organizations as Brazilian Chapter of IHSS, Brazilian Corporation for Agricultural Research -Embrapa, through lhe Agriculturallnstrumentation Center, University of São Paulo (USP), Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar) and State University of S4p Paulo (UNESP). From these I, as current Director of Embrapa-Agricultural Instrumentation Center, would like to thank several colleagues that were deeply involved in this organization, and mainly Drs. Debora Milori and Wilson Lopes da Silva, for outstanding dedication and contributions. In the 20th anniversary of our Agricultural Instrumentation Center it was a great honor to be able to participate in this organization. Furthermore, there are fundamental contributions from Brazilian financial agencies, as FINEP, CNPq, CAPES and FAPESP and private company "Turfa". Important algo were contributions from enterprises Eventus, by secretary organization, Adaltech, responsible by electronic material submission, and RIMA, by editing printed materiais. Finally, my special gratitude to President and Past-President of IHSS, Maria De Nobili and Vona Chen, respectively, for their confidence in our capacity as well as many relevant suggestions.
It is with pleasure I send out to ali participants my warmest regards and a heartfelt welcome to Sao Pedra, Brazil, and thanksfor attending our meeting.
