Heat and drought stresses during soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill] seed filling can result in severe seed shriveling, depending on the susceptibility of the genotype. This problem results in the production of low quality seed and grain, resulting in serious losses to soybean growers. The expression of this characteristic varies according to the severity of these climatic stresses from year to year. The precise characterization of soybean genotypes for tolerance to this problem depends on the standardization of the stressful climatic conditions that will be imposed to the plants during seed filling. In 1994 and 1998 plants of 'Bragg' (susceptible to seed shriveling), 'BR-36'(moderately susceptible) and 'BR-16' (tolerant) were exposed to four climatic conditions during seed filling. These conditions resulted from the combination of two temperature (T) regimens (high - maximum T of 36.C; and moderate maximum T of 28.C) and two levels of gravimetric soil moisture (M) in the soil (dry: 25% water, dry basis; and normal: 35% water). Under moderate T the occurrence of seed shriveling was inexpressive, even in dry soil. Under high T, 'Bragg' produced a high percentage of shriveled seed, independently of M. This fact indicates that for susceptible genotypes the factor T is more preponderant than M, with regards to the expression of seed shriveling, On the other hand, for moderately susceptible genotypes, both T and M are determinant factors for the expression of this characteristic. It was concluded that the evaluated methodology can be successfully applied for screening soybean genotypes for the tolerance to seed shriveling.
