The complex interactions between phytophagous insects and their hosts are the results of a long and continuing evolutionary process. Discounting the relatively uncommon instances of mutualism, it seems likely that any tendency toward parallel evolution must be restricted to the development of defense mechanisms by the plant and of counteracting adaptations by the insect. By this simple view, the relationships between insect and plant may be divided into two principal aspects: host selection [in the broad sense as per Thorsteinson (163)] by the insect; and resistance to the insect by the plant. But these aspects are not fully separable, and analyses of the causes of plant resistance must also include consideration of the behavioral and physiological characteristics of the insect, as was pointed out by Painter in 1936 (126). |
