Generalizations about food crop response to liming of acid soils in the tropics are illustrated. Current methods of extrapolating and interpolating experimental results to other soils and crops are examined, and none are found to be universally useful. Future network actions should be the following: (a) interested countries should be encouraged and supported to collect and summarize their in-country data on management of soil acidity, including current research and an appraisal of research needs. There should be an effort devoted to collecting and summarizing these reviews. (b) There is need for 5 to 10 long-term lime experiments with careful attention to measuring critical soil and crop parameters so that results of all experiments can be compared and used purposes of extrapolation and interpolation. (c) There is need for two basic research projects: one to describe in detail the reactions and chemistry in the root-soil interface, and another to describe the long-term changes in chemical properties throughout the soil profile following liming. These two projects are essential to using our experimental data for all economic, soil, crop, and climatic conditions. |
