Line patterning technique with metal was used to produce interdigitated electrodes of gold on plastic, which were the base to develop the sensors for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and water vapor. The sensors were obtained by covering the interdigitated electrodes with a thin film of emeraldine salt by using two methods, by dipping into a solution of Emeraldine-HCSA in hexafluoro-2-propanol and by in situ deposition of polyaniline (Emeraldine-HCI). From the in situ deposited emeraldine-HCI two others sensors were obtained by anion replacement, the Emeraldine-HCSA and Emeraldine-HDBSA. For polyaniline emeraldine salt, the sensors have presented changes in its conductivity when it was removed from stream of dry nitrogen gas and put in the presence of water vapor from the static laboratory air showing a good sensitivity. The changes in the electrical resistance of the sensors were recorded and the sensitivity and reversibility were evaluated. In this process, the anion plays an important role, and Emeraldine-'HCI has shown the highest sensitivity to the humidity present in the laboratory air. The Emeraldine-HCSA sensors have shown good sensitivity when in the presence of polar volatile organic vapors such as chloroform, tetrahydrofuran (THF) and acetone. Therefore, the fine patterning of gold can be used to develop a simple, inexpensive sensor device to portable electronic system. |
