Soil mapping has been considered difficult in certain areas of the Depressao Central of the State of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil, due to intricate soil distribution patterns. The present research indicates that such complexity is related to: the existence of unconsolidated sedimentary deposits which overlie Gondwanan and Precambrian age rocks, which were not recognized by earlier workers; to the complex stratigraphic sequence of the region and to the action of processes of landscape formation and destruction. The morphology of the sedimentary deposits and soils developed from them suggests that the sediments were deposited into bays or lakes associated with one or more high sea levels during the Pleistocene, and/or are related to pedimentation and floodplain aggradation processes, which also occurred in Pleistocene time. The morphological characteristics of the soils developed from the Quaternary sediments at three distinct elevations show clear increases in weathering from the lower toward the higher positions in the landscape. Quantitative mineralogical analysis of these pedons show increasing amount of iron oxides, amorphous materials and kaolinite and halloysite in the same sequence. These data can be related to times of sediment deposition and subsequent soil development, if it is assumed that the environmental conditions as well as the physical and chemical properties of the sediments were similar at the time of deposition. In support of this assumption is the similar position of the soils..........
