The objective of this project was to identify through literature review factors affecting machinery selection and quantify the effect of field size and shape upon tractorized operations. By expressing the equation proposed by Hunt (1983), to calculate pattern efficiency for a headland field pattern, in terms of area and the ratio of length to width of the field for four sizes of tractors with an appropriate size of plough for each, the effect of field size and shape upon tractorized operations were evaluated. This evaluation was made by calculation of a cost factor that is the inverse of pattern efficiency. Area varied from 0.5 to 32 ha in a geometrical progression while the ratio of length to width of the field varied from 1 (square field) up to 5 (rectangular field with length 5 times the width) in steps of 1. Results showed that savings up to 10.3% on mechanisation costs could be achieved by improving the combination of tractor and field size, whilst savings du to field shape varied between 1.1 and 4.1%. Results also showed that these factors influence tractor size selection, mainly where mechanization of small field with short furrow length are being considered. |
