Earthworms are important macroinvertebrates that provide soil ecosystem services and are also useful environmental bioindicators.
Urban areas around the world have major impacts on biodiversity and the objective of the present study was to
assess the role of urban parks of Curitiba, Paraná State, in preserving native earthworm species. Earthworm populations
were sampled in five parks (Barigui, Tingui, Barreirinha, Passaúna and the Botanic Garden), in two land use systems
(grass lawns and secondary forest fragments) in two seasons, summer (November 2013) and winter (June 2014). A total
of twelve earthworm species were identified, belonging to six families: Glossoscolex sp.1, Fimoscolex sp.1, sp.2 and sp.3
(Glossoscolecidae), Pontoscolex corethrurus (Rhinodrilidae), Eukerria tucumana (Ocnerodrilidae), Amynthas gracilis,
Amynthas corticis, Metaphire californica (Megascolecidae), Aporrectodea rosea and Lumbricus rubellus (Lumbricidae),
the latter being the first record for this species in Brazil. In addition, a single unidentified juvenile Dichogaster sp. (Acanthodrilidae)
was found. Four new species were found and three out of five urban parks of Curitiba (especially the Botanic
Garden) were able to preserve native species, though their abundance was low and exotic species (n=8) predominated,
attributed to human disturbance that favors invasion and colonization of exotic earthworms. |

Cassava is an important food for millions of people in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Despite its great importance, this crop still has some limiting factors regarding nutritional aspects, as well as its cultivation, because some varieties are quite affected by biotic and non biotic factors. To help to overcome those obstacles, several research groups are integrating an entire scientific knowledge to generate more productive cassava varieties and to improve the existing ones. As an alternative, Biotechnology is contributing with the use of different techniques, standing out the micropropagation for the production of healthy material for propagation, providing a high number of plants in a short period of time, and the somatic embryogenesis as a system of regeneration of plants, that is a basic requirement for the improvement of a selected variety through genetic transformation. The somatic embryogenesis can be an interesting in vitro plant regeneration system for cassava. The aim of this work was to study somatic embryogenesis and in vitro plant regeneration of Cigana Preta variety from shoot tip and young leaves from in vitro plants. The explants were cultivated in MS media with 8,0 and 12,0 mg·L-1 of 2,4-D or Picloram. Two media cultures were tested to the embryos development. Embryos in cotyledonal stage were inoculated in germination media constituted of vitamins and salts of MS, 2 ?M of cupper sulfate, 2,4 g·L-1 of Phytagel®, and 1,77 ?M of BAP. The major frequency of callus and number of embryos per explant was obtained with 8 mg·L-1 of auxin Picloram. The regenerated plants presented normal development and in a minimum period of four weeks were cultivated in specific media to Micropropagation showing a normal behavior in this media.
