The availability of by-product gypsum from the electric power generating industry and ways in which gypsum can mitigate subsurface soil acidity and enhance deeper plant rooting. Data from preliminary experiments on Appalachian Region soils and from long-term experiments on tropical soils of Brazil are used to illustrate potential benefits and problems from gypsum use. Recent efforts at diagnosing which soils will benefit from gypsum application and approaches to recommending application rates are reviewed. |
