Conteúdo:  The effect of dehydrated citrus pulp with or without fresh forage on animal perimanence, rumen fermentation and incidence of parakeratosis was studied in 15 dairy calves from 5 to 120 days of age. Weaning was at 35 days after the calves had consumed 90 litres of wholc milk. The treatments were: A) integral diet (68% citrus pulp); B) integral diet plus 2.5 kg of fresh forage/100 kg LW; and C) integral diet plus fresh forage ad libitum. There was a greater consumpition of DM (P <.01) and ME (P<.05) in the calves that had access to forage, but, efficiency of ME utilization for live weifht gain was better (P<.01) in those without forage. The integral diet alone was characterized by a lower rumen ph (P<.05). There were no diferences in total VFA concentration but individual molar proporitions were greater (P<.001) for acid and lower for propionic, butyric and valeric acid with forage. The calves given the integral diet alone showed severe rumen parakerotosis. Tissue weight (P<.001) of the reticulo-rumen was greater and abomasum (P<.05) and small intesitine (P<.001) was lower in those fed an integral diet only. The addition of fresh forage produced a beneficial effect by reducing the lesionsof the rumen wall.

Conteúdo:  ABSTRACT (Using palynological evidence from royal jelly to mediate the spread of Paenibacillus larvae in Brazil). Royal jelly may contain pollen grains and their presence can be used to determine the phytogeographical origin of the product. This study analyzed the phytogeographical origin of commercial royal jelly samples from São Paulo State, tested as part of the Brazilian Federal Inspection System (SIF), found to be contaminated with spores of the bacterium Paenibacillus larvae, that causes the American Foulbrood Disease. The pollen grains of Castanea had the highest total percentage, with lower percentages of Cirsium/Carduus, Cistus, Parthenocissus, Prunus, Quercus, Robinia, Scrophulariaceae, Taraxacum, Tilia, among others. This pollen spectrum is incompatible with royal jelly samples produced in Brazil. The pollen spectrum resembled that of an imported product, compatible with the Northern Hemisphere origin. Brazilian legislation does not require the phytogeographic origin of imported bee products to be analyzed by palynological procedures, but it is mandatory to have a certifi cate issued by the country of origin attesting the absence of pathogens, monitored with the objective of preventing the exotic diseases from entering Brazil. Palynology, therefore, proved to be fundamental in detecting imports of this contaminated batches.
