A comparison of results yielded by diffusion and dilution methods of testing antimicrobial susceptibility with Staphylococcus aureus mastitis strains was made. Except in the case of penicillin (statistical significant difference), and possibly ampicillin, these findings showed an excellent correlation between the procedures. The agreement was perfect with methicillin, chloramphenicol, gentamicin, and kanamycin. Sixty-four isolates from CA., U.S.A. and 36 from R.S., Brazil were tested. To all antimicrobics but penicillin the Brazilian strains showed consistently more resistance. The susceptibility patterns for isolates from CA. was much more favorable than a previous study had shown. Susceptibility data from world-wide sources are presented with reservations due to the lack of standart methods used in their determination. When the results were related to known antimicrobial levels attainable in mammary gland secretions a quite different standart for "susceptible" and "resistant" emerged. The necessity for uniform international standards for judging antimicrobial susceptibility of animal pathogens was stressed. |
