Creep feeding is a kind of fed system, in which young animals have free access to supplementation for correcting nutritional deficiency of diet based on maternal milk and pasture roughage during suckling period, caused by animals intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Depends on the level and the kind of nutritional deficit the supplementation could be based exclusively on pasture (creep grazing) or on energetic and protein concentrates (energetic-protein creep feeding) or only 00 protein (protein creep feeding) or energy (energetic creep feeding). This kind of handling, initially used for bovines, have being used a lot in ovine and caprine breeding for meat production and in countries where the bovine exploration is improved, instead of the few data in foreign references related to its effects on herd performance, mainly in relation to female reproductive performance. ln re1atiün to goat and sheep performances, researchers have demonstrated increase from 10 to 20 % in daily weight gain and, consequently, in live weight at wean of animals submitted to creep feeding. In conclusion, this practice can be used as tool for enhance productive performance of native goat and sheep herds. |
