The experiments were conducted to determine the effect of sant or soil infestion on P balance in sheep. In Exp. 1, 18 werthers (44,9 Kg) were fed a basal diet containing 10% of either sand. Colombian soil or Costa Rican soil in a completely randomized design. In Exp.2, 20 wethers (40,5 kg) were fed the same three diets and, in addition the basal diet was included as treatment. Animals were injected iv with a single dose of .5 mCi of 32 P as orthophosphoric acid to facilitate determination of metabolic fecal P. Total fecal and urine collections were made for 7 d and blood samples were obtained three times. The Costa Rican soil diet contained two times the Al and six times the Fe and Mn of that in the Colombian diet with levels of 16,620, 7,190 and 272 vs 7,504, 1,194 and 40,7 ppm, respectively. Levels of the same elements for the sand diet were 346, 199 and 36ppm, and for the basal diet 147, 88 and 35 ppm. I Exp. 1, sheep fed the sand or Costa Rican soil diets had lower (P<.05) serum P concentration than sheep fed the Colombian soil diet. Total and metabolic fecal P were higher (P<.0,5) and urinary P Lower (P<.05) for sheep fed the sand or Costa Rican soil diet, resulting in lower (P<.01) apparent and true P absorption and P balance for these two diets compared with the Colombian soil diet. In Exp.2, apparent and true P absorption were lower (P<.05) for sheep fed the Costa Rican soil diet tahan for those fed the control or sand diets... |
