Aluminum (Al) tolerance in sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) was studied in nutrient solution. The relative seminal root lengths of lines from the World Collections (IS Numbers) and other sources suggested that a reasonable amount of genetic variations apparently exists in sorghum for tolerance to Al toxicity. The estimates of general and specific combining ability, based of F1 crosses, indicated that the variances for general combining ability of male and female (R and Alines) sorghum lines accounted for most of the variation (52%) for the trait, but specific combining ability was also important. This high ratio of general combining ability emphasizes the importance of the additive gene effects over non-additive gene effects for aluminium tolerance in sorghum. |
