Commercial seed production of tropical grasses is limited by uneven flowering and seed shedding and that of the legumes by diffuse flowering, pod shattering, and shading of ma-
ture pods by new growth. While purity analyses of legumes present no problems, a number of grasses impose difficulties due to size and the structure of the 'seed'. Hard-seededness and dormancy are common to both groups. Morphological descriptions of the several grasses and legumes discussed, together with brief on their agronomic characters have been collated in the Australian Herbage Plant Register, ed. C. BARNARD, 1967. |
