During April 2000, the UCCE farm advisor for Tulare County reported observing a peculiar decline in a 50-year-old lemon orchard. This decline was mostly limited to individual limbs or sectors of the affected trees. Wilting of the foliage associated with copious gum oozing from lesions and extensive salmon-colored fungal fruiting bodies surrounding the lesions were observed. The lesions appeared to have originated from wounds caused by pruning, sunburn, or cold. The oozing lesions progressed downward, often extending all the way down into the main trunk. The affected limbs died progressively from the origin of the infection. |
