The purpose of this study was to observe the behavior of corn inbreds when exposed to successive periods of water stress during early growth. Particular attention was given to moisture stress realtions to soil moisture level, leaf water content, ear kernel now number, plant heighy and dry matter production. Three sweet and two dent corn inbred lines of similar maturity WC 7, W 1736, W 153 R and W 22 were grwn in the greenhouse at an 18C day, 13C night temperature regime. This comparatively low temperature was used to slow development of meristematic tissue and extend the period of recptiveness to stress. Theatments consisted of five consective periods of moisture stress starting at the fourth leaf stage no the average. Plant condition was used as an indicator of moisture stress. during a treatment, moisture was with-held until the plants wlted during the day and did not recover by the following morning. Treatment differences but not variety nor intenraction differneces were highly significant for soil moisture. Soil moisture was lowest at the end of treatment 4. (...) |
