Soybeans is an important field crop in Thailand. The area planted is about 390,600 hectares with production of 350,000-400,000 tonnes. There are 3 seasons for soybean cultivation: early rainy season, late rainy season and dry season. There are 3 groups of soybean variety: S.J. Group, specific area group and new variety group. In the last 10 yars, farmers graw soybean as cover crop when the land was free but now they have to take intensive care for their crop because soybean price is higher than the past. There are 2 ways of land preparation. Firstly, farmers have to plough their land; secondly they do not plough but only make the hole for seed and eliminate weed before canopy formation. The use of machinery now is more popular as exemplified by the plater and threshing machine which are widely used. Soybean farmers, comprising about 20 percentage of progressive farmers, obtain more than 1,800 kg. yield per hectare, 60 percentage of moderate farmers obtain 1,200-1,800 kg. yield per hectare and 20 percentage of peasante farmers obtain less than 1,200 kg. yield per hectare. There are 2 areas catagorized by farmer experience : One is the main producing area where most farmers have experience in soybean, the other is new potential area for soybean expansion in which farmers have very little experience on soybean. Soybean production was utilized as food product in 2 ways first in the medium scale food industry that produces soy milk and soy starch for local food mixture.
