In the face of a major global drinking water crisis, it becomes increasingly important to raise concerns on the use of sustainable techniques, mainly those aiming at saving potable water, especially in the seafood industry, that consumes significant amounts of water resources. In this context, the aim of the present study was to carry out industrial water management, quantifying and qualifying effluents from the general activities of a seafood processing industry, in order to identify which effluent exhibited reuse potential. Water use (water balance) was measured at six fish processing steps, and effluent physicochemical and bacteriological analyses were carried out. Direct reuse was not indicated for any of the analyzed effluents, mainly due to high levels of total coliform bacteria (104 to 107 MPN/100 ml). However, indirect water recycling and reuse can potentially be applied after a simple effluent primary treatment and disinfection from the freezing tunnel and cooling chamber defrosting, in order to supply cooling tower demands. This practice may reduce the total average water consumption of the processing unit by 11% and, if the effluents from the cooling tower purges were to also be reused for other administrative ends, this reduction may reach 21.9%, enhancing the competitiveness of this industry and preserving fresh drinking water. |

[Nitrogen balance of goats fed cashew apple and increasing levels of soybean oil]. Abstract: Recent research has suggested that the association of tannins with sources of oils can be a strategy to increase the concentration of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) in milk of ruminants. However, using this nutritional strategy requires an assessment of the impact of tannins on nitrogen balance, mainly because the ability of those molecules to form complexes with nitrogen compounds. This study was conducted to evaluate the impact of including soybean oil and cashew apple (a feed rich in tannin) in the diet of dairy goats on nitrogen balance of the animals. Ten lactating goats were allocated in individual pens and used in a double Latin square 5x5 design experiment. Five treatments were evaluated: T1 (control) - 0% cashew apple and 0% soybean oil; T2 - 33% cashew apple and 0% soybean oil; T3 - 33% of cashew apple and 1.5% soybean oil; T4 - 33% of cashew apple and 2.5% soybean oil; T5 - 33% of cashew apple and 3.5% soybean oil. Fecal excretion of nitrogen was increased, while urinary nitrogen excretion was reduced by including cashew apple in the diet (P <0.05). Therefore, cashew apple alone was not able to reduce nitrogen balance of lactating goats (T1 = T2; P>0.05). Including soybean oil did not affect fecal and urinary excretion of nitrogen. However, because soybean oil impaired nitrogen intake, a significant decrease in nitrogen balance was observed when it was included in the diet in association with cashew apple (P<0.05). Thus, an additional protein supplementation is recommended when cashew apple and soybean oil are included in the diet of lactating goats.
