Our team have been evolved in a project for the characterisation of the internal variability of the Iberian pig expressed in several varieties. We concluded a great genetic diversity inside the breed, which present some varieties with big census, while other were endangered or near the extinction. At the end of this study we reach a question 'what is the application of these findings? The answer was the development of conservation plans for those rare varieties and the utilisation of improved animals of the big varieties to extend the genetic progress. Both points suggest the necessity of the development of semen banks to be employed with the explained purposes. The North of the province of Cordoba is one of the most important Spanish regions in the breeding of Iberian pigs, in this way the Agriculture Department of the Cordoba's Government was easily sensitised for the creation and development of a ex situ conservation plan to assist the farmer of the north. This programme consist in three phases: the first was the creation of assisted reproduction station, the second was the creation of a semen bank of all the varieties of the Iberian pig, the third was the organisation of the bank in two differentiated purposes; one destined to long term conservation for those varieties near the extinction, the second used for the insemination of the north populations. In this programme we have developed other actions such us the creation of a insemination circuit with some associated farms, and the study of Iberian pig male sexual characteristics (anatomic, behavioural and seminal).
