Abstract: The total number of goats in Egypt was 3197645 and their population in Sinai and Suez Canal area was 181047 and 32189 respectively. A steady supply of milk was considered as the principal goal of dairy goat industry, therefore, it was essential to understand th principle of goat reproduction and fertility in order to perform more effective management. This study is an attempt to throw some light on reproductive pattern as well as some reproductive troubles in Damascus goats reared under desert conditions in Egypt. The optimum breeding season was from August to November. the average length of estrous cycle was 19.5o +/- 0.35 days. The serum progesterone levels during follicular and lutear phases of the estrous cycle were 0.12 +/- 0.03 ng/ml and 5.43 +/- 0.26 ng/ml respectively. The conception rate to the first service was 64.15 % while the fertility rate was 70.0 %. The litter size at birth was 1.74 and the incidence of twins was 50 %. The birth weight and the pre-weaning daily gain were 2161.88 +/- 97.16 g and 91.10 +/- 0.72 g, respectively. The incidence of intersex, abortion and stillbirth was 6.25 % , 11.9 % and 9.52 % respectively, while the incidence of kid mortality till weaning was 23.44 %. |
