Abstract : The effect in normal cattle of different substances used or suggested for the treatment of bovine ketosis was assessed by changes in blood sugar and liver glycogen. A total of 25 normal lactating and dry Ayrshire cows, some tested more than once after a suitable interval, were used in 6 experiments. Glucose given intravenously increased blood sugar for a short time. Glycerol by mouth substantially increased liver glycogen. Single injections of glueocorticoid drugs gave a response, the intramuscular route being more effective than the intravenous, and the highest and most sustained response was after intramuscular injection of ss-methasone. Potassium chlorate by mouth produced no increase in blood sugar or liver glycogen |
