Mango (Mangifera indica L.) is one of the most important tropical fruits produced in Brazil, with an estimated cultivate area of 74 thousand hectares and production of more than 1.1 million tons in 2009. The southeast and northeast regions contain 28.6 and 68.6% of the total area under of mango cultivation. These regions are also the most important from the point of view of production and exportation. Exportation of this fruit in 2010 was around 124.7 thousand tons, of which the northeast region produced 80%. Production in the southeast is mainly for domestic consumption. Climate conditions and use of floral induction and irrigation technologies allow mango to be produced throughout the year in the country's semiarid conditions, which allow the fruit to be offered to different world markets during appropriate sales periods. The main cultivars produced in Brazil are from Florida, USA. Harvest and postharvest practices utilized are factors that also contribute to attend the needs of the external mango market.
