The research described in this paper models and analyses patterns of land cover changes in the floodplain of the river Sarine in Switzerland. The study is based on photo-interpretation and field observation of environmental data over a period spanning almost seventy years. Our spatio-temporal analysis combines deductive and inductive modelling approaches. The deductive component of our study is performed through spatial data analysis that evaluates successive land cover maps in order to derive transition maps, cross-tabulation matrices, and statistical land pattern indices that measure and qualify directions and patterns of change. The inductive component of our modelling approach characterises these changes from a qualitative point of view, that is, the identification of spatio-temporal processes that generate changes at different levels of granularity. Such an approach provides an important insight into the mechanisms and rates of environmental change in the studied site, and may act as a reference for other environmental studies oriented to the description and understanding of spatio-temporal phenomena. |
