The combined effects of various irrigation regimes and girdling techniques for raising tree productivity levels were studied using a new, unconventional experimental mode. This mode is based on the principle of gradual changes along a main variable "axis", with one or more secondary treatements being replicated, at an optimal level, across the principal treatment. This provides all combinations of principal with secondary factors being tested. Trials incorporating this experimental mode utilize so much less area, resources and labor that numerous duplications of one set of combined factors can be carried out simultaneously under various cultural and edaphic conditions, something that has become almost prohibitively espensive when using conventional methods of horticultural research. Preliminary, first-year results from two such trials, in grapefruit and 'Shamouti' orange groves, are presented here and discussed. |
