Fat and muscle in the carcass can be precisely assessed from relatively few scans. Bone is less precisely assessed even when up to 20 scans were taken, reflecting the complex lattice structure of the skeleton and its units (Young et al., 1996). In comparison, fat and muscle are relatively simple in shape (blocks or sheets of tissue) so registration errors do not influence their areas as much. Consequently, animal positioning and scan registration are critical to minimise errors in estimation of bone size. These conclusions should be verified by comparison with traditional assessment methods such as carcass dissection. |
