Heterozygous (69) and homozygous (38) Booroola Merino ewes and 82 Angora does were observed to determine birth sites, times of birth and characteristics of the birth site in 1991. During the second year of observation (1992) the numbers of animals available were reduced to 48 heterozygous and 33 homozygous Booroola Merino ewes and 49 Angora does. The birth times were randomly distributed over 24 h for heterozygous and homozygous ewes and were similar for both years. There were no differences between the genotypes of sheep. However, the Angora goats gave birth more frequently during the daylight hours. There was no effect of the age of does or ewes on choice of birth site and elevation of the paddock did not affect this choice. When paddock features wereclassified into three types of birth sites (open sites, shady areas and areas close to vertical objects), there was no significant difference in the choice of birth sites by ewes during 1991. However, in 1992, births occured more frequently in open areas. If shady sites and areas close to vertical objects were combined as protected areas, there was no difference between the choice of protected or open areas in the 2 years. In 1991 the does chose the protected areas rather than open areas to give birth but this difference was not significant in 1992. |

ABSTRACT - The spread of anthelmintic resistance has been interfering in goat production. One further alternative to current methods of controlling worms is the identification of breeds or individuals within a breed that are genetically resistant to gastrointestinal nematodes. The aim of this study was to characterize phenotypically F2 crossbred goats resistant and susceptible to gastrointestinal nematodes in order to identify the animals more resistant and more susceptible in the herd. For this, 172 F2 animals of both sexes, with aged between five and ten months were used. Feces and blood samples were collected weekly to parasitological (fecal culture and FEC) and haematological examinations (packed cell volume, total plasma protein and blood eosinophils), respectively. On the same day, the animals were weighted and submitted to evaluation of body condition scores and Famacha method of worm control. Animals that had the highest and the lowest FEC were characterized as susceptible and resistant, respectively. These animals were slaughtered for recovery the nematodes from the abomasum, small intestine and large intestine for further counting. Animals characterized as resistant showed lower average values of FEC and higher percentages of packed cell volume, total plasma protein and blood eosinophils as compared to the animal of the susceptible group. Trichostrongylus sp. was predominant in the fecal cultures (54,8%), followed by Haemonchus sp. (43%) and Oesophagostumum sp. (2,2%). The mean parasite loads of the resistant and susceptible groups were 1299 and 1905, respectively. The results for sensitivity and specificity using Famacha method were 45,5% and 91%, respectively, for resistant animals and 40% and 90,2% for the susceptible animals. It was concluded that the use of FEC, packed cell volume, total plasma protein and blood eosinophils as phenotypic markers is a viable tool for characterize animals resistant and susceptible to gastrointestinal nematodes. This characterization is important, once the resistant animals eliminate less nematode eggs in the environment, leading to less contamination of the pasture and, consequently, lower infection of other animals. The values of Famacha compared with the packed cell volume not allowed us to select the anemic animals.
