The incidence of abortions among Angora goats has been shown to be partially due to excessive circulating oestrogens, especially in the energy deficient animal (Wentzel, Morgerthal & Van Niekerk, 1975; Wentzel & Viljoen, 1975). An elevated level of circulating oestrogens may be due to an increased production there of and/or to a relatively slow clearance rate from the circulation of the animal, resulting in accumulation of the steroid. In this experiment the latter was investigated by measuring the clearance rate of oestradiol-17 beta from the circulation of pregnant Angora does. For the purpose of comparison a parallel trial was carried out on pregnant Merino ewes, a breed in which the kineties of oestrogen metabolism has been studied in detail (Challis, Harrison & Heap, 1973). |
