Abstract: Forty-five confirmed aborters and 40 normal does were used in an experiment to investigate the effect of adverse nutrition on the incidence of abortion. lnitially all the animals received a ration furnishing approximately twice the energy and protein requirement for maintenance. During the last third of pregnancy the energy intake of a random sample of these animals was limited to three quarters of the requirement for maintenance. The low energy diet had a highly significant effect (P<0,01) on the incidence of abortions among confirmed aborters, but not among normal does. Abortions following the stress of submaintenance energy nutrition were characterised by the expulsion of apparently normal foetuses with a fresh appearance. |
