Some genetic aspects of the resistance to oral infection with the cytoplasmic-polyhedrosis virus in the silkworm, Bombyx mori (Linnaeus) have been ascertained in this study. Differences in the resistance to infection were observed among several silkworm strains, and the resistance increased with larval age. The resistance of the first-instar larva of F1 hybrids varied markedly with respect to the maternal strain, being different in reciprocal hybrids, but the effect of the maternal strain gradually decreased with larval age and no effect was clearly observable during the older larval stages. In general, F1 hybrids showed heterosis in their resistance to cytoplasmic polyhedrosis, i.e., they were more resistant than their parental inbred lines. |
