At IITA we consider that flexibility providies the means for successful achivement of our goals. Hence, this paper reflects what are considered as the major elements in ITTA strategy for Musa improvement at this moment. ITTA breeding philosophy summarizes our long-term goal: "to develop not only disease and pest-resistant materials, but also better cultivars for the smalholders who produce plantian and banana in compound or home gardens and large field plantations". IITA aims to develop better cultivars within improved, sustainable and perennial production systems. Better cultivars must have high and stable yields, adaptation to target areas, resistance/tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses, and acceptable quality. To achieve this goal, an initial ideotype has been defined. Also, to achive durable resistance our approach consists of developing hybrids whinch combine different sources of resistance. |
