The annual productivity of Microlaena stipoides and other species normally growing on sheep camp areas and the grazing value and fertiliser response of Microlaena stipoides were evaluated. Over a period of 414 days of observations a quantity of 20,460 kg/ha of dry matter was produced by sheep camp species with Microlaena stipoides contributed a high proportion of the dry matter during the winter and early spring monthes. The protein content of Microlaena stipoides regrowth was higher for autumn, winter and spring than for the summer months. The highest digestibility (70% to about 63%) of the forage ocorred during the winter and spring and then declined in the late summer and autumn monthes (45% to about 53%). Soil collected from sheep camp greve consistently greater growth of Microlaena stipoides in relation to off camp soil when growing in a glassholuse trial. The addition of fertiliser (phosphorus and nitrogen) and sheep dung showed similar results by increasing biomass production during the first harvest period on off camp soil. The dry matter produced was also increased by the addition of sulphur to camp soil during the second harvest as well as by the addition of sulphur with nitrogen at the third harvest. All soil nutrients examined (phosphorus, nitrogen, potassium, calcium, magnesium and sodium) and the concentration of organic matter accumulated to quite high levels on both camping sites. The reater proportion of phosphorus was found in the organic form. The concentration for all nutrients in the soil tended to rise during the summer months. The quantity of nutrients mineralised from dung and the addition of fertiliser did not bring the production of Microlaena stipoides on off cam soil up to the level aschieved on soils taken from camp sites which suggests the nutrients applied fell short of those available in the camp site soils. In general,Microlaena stipoides produces forage of high value for animal production when growing in sheep camp areas.
