The new systems of energy feed evaluation for ruminants (cattle, sheep, goats) proposed in France are described. Like the new Dutch and Swiss systems, they are based on net energy for lactation or net energy for maintenance plus meat production; the net energy contents of feeds are calculated from their ME content and the partial efficiencies of ME utilization for maintenance, lactation or fattening. However, they differ from the other systems in three aspects.
(1) The ME content of a feedstuff is estimated from its gross energy content, energy digestibility and the ratio between DE and ME.
(2) The energy values of feedstuffs are expressed in feed units (FU) (UFL for lactation and UFV for maintenance + meat production, with an animal production level of 1.5). One FU is the energy value of 1 kg standard barley.
(3) Energy allowances for slowly or rapidly growing animals have been determined using the results of feeding trials, due to the lack of information both on maintenance requirement and energy retention of animals of the various breeds used in France, and on the efficiency of ME utilization for growth. The advantages, the precision and the weak points of these new systems are discussed. However, they have enough flexibility to allow incoirporation of further information. |
