The Philippines is actively working on researches on monoclonal antibodies for diagnosis of viral diseases. At present, monoclonal antibodies are beinf developed for banana bunchy-top, banana bract mosaic, and abaca mosaic. These have already been tested on plantlets derived from tissue culture. rapid testing techinique is a very important tool to ensure that the Philippines in-vitro duplicate collections of banana germplasm are virus-free. The great wealth of genetic resources at the region's banana germplasm bank located in Davao was recognized during the discussion. The participants agreed that measures must be undertaken to safeguard this varietal colletion against the entry of systemic diseases such as those caused by viruses. The Philippines' experience in commercial production of bananas for export is unique in the region. The country is willing to share its expertise on this field to other country-members comprising the network. |
