Conteúdo:  Several single and double crosses representing eight out of nine genotypes of the two-locus model of simple inheritance for prolificacy, as proposed by Harris (1974), were tested for development of second ears. Analysis of variance and means for the genotype showed sizeable differences among genotype means for variables such as silk number, silk delay, and ear number. Correlation analysis between the several evaluated traits helped in defining the genotype groups characteristics. Data from same entries were algo used to obtain expected distributions for segregating generations in terms of earshoots with no silk, silk but no ear and ear. With these distributions and the data of twenty other segregating entries (double crosses), also available from the same experiment, the prediction value of the two-locus model was tested. Results from several chi-square tests led to the rejection of the two-locus model of inheritance for prolificacy. However, indications existed in this work that the number of loci, although more than two, may not be large. The fact that Harris (1974) was able to separate his experimental material, quite successfully, in three categories--non-prolific, semi-prolific, and prolific--also supports this view. The intra-plant regulation of prolificacy seems to involve the distribution of nutrients to the developing earshoots and also the direct control through a repressor hormone.
