The concept of core collections was introduced with the purpose of minimising costs and increasing efficiency of germplasm description and explointation. To achieve these aims the core collection must contain maximum genetic diversity of the entire collection assembled in the germplasm bank. An important issue in forming core collections is how to identify non diverse subgroups of accessions and how to sample and select them based on field data consisting of measurements of several attributes in various accessions across environments. These data have a complex structure; therefore multivariate statistical techniques will facilitate the description and interpretation of accession response patterns across several attributes and environments. Classification and ordination statistical methods are two major sets of multivariate techniques commonly used for these purposes. Our objectives were to investigate the use of these multivariate analyses to; 1) study patterns of phenotypic diversity for morpho-agronomic traits studied in the accessions of Tuxpeno race complex and 2) to help the curator decide how and what accessions should be selected for forming the core subset. |
