Sixteen lines of Arachis hypogaea L. plus nine other species from section Arachis are evaluated for resistance to early leafspot, Cercospora arachidicola Hori, in North Carolina (USA). The cultivated lines represented germplasm sources which had previously been reproted as resistant to early leafspot. Data were taken on number of lesions per leaf number of lesions per leaf area, total lesion area per leaf area, percent defoliation, procut of defoliation times lesion number per leaf area, and product of percent defoliation times lesion area per leaf area were compared. We concluded that the number of lesions per leaf and percent defoliation were most useful for screening resistant germplasm sources. The wild species were generally more resistant than cultivated lines, with A. chacoense and A. stenosperma being very highly resistant to early leafspot. The cultivated lines ranged from moderately resistant to highly susceptible. The cultivated entries, PI 109839, PI 270806, and NC 3033, had the highest levels of resistance and are thus the germplasm sources with the most immediate potential for developing early leafspot-resistant varieties in North Carolina. |
