The state of Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, has a very important position in Brasilian agriculture as a major producer of food mainly for the large centre of population around it which totals 8 million inhabitants. The most important crops produced are tropical fruits, rice and beans. These are produced on small farms although fairly good agronomic methods are used, for example selected seeds, fertilization and crop protection against pests and diseases, farmers cannot avoid the serious of weeds which grow fast in tropical areas. The effect of weeds on crop yields is apparent not only on the farms but also in the agricultural research institute fields. Normal tillage methods are used and the weeds are controlled by herbicides. When the farmers do not practice weed control the quality of their vegetables is not good enough for the market and the yield is lower. This is mainly due to the simutaneous development of the main crop and the weeds, which compete for water, light and nutrients. The Agricultural Research Institute near Rio de Janeiro is trying to solve the weed problems as part of its agricultural experimental work. But when a trial has great importance for the agricultural development of the region the technicians use herbicides to control all kinds of weeds more quickly and efficiently. There is no doubt that the herbicides are very efficient but the costs in some cases are high, and make it difficult to assess the value of an experiment. Tillage experiments have been carried out in citrus orchards and it has been concluded that some varieties of weeds can protect the soil surface against exposure to the sun, and maintain its moisture percolation, but this is not so in the case of weeds like nut-grass (Cyperus rotundus L). Some money is wasted in weed control for experiments, and in other cases the expenditure cannot be avoided. But agricultural machinery can offer considerable assistence in weed control when the application is correct, and it can become cheaper and more efficient in experimental work and in all husbandry practices. The object of this paper is to study weed by machines and how far they can be useful in this very important battle. Weed control is a very wide subject so the intention is to precis the most important points, looking at experimental work which is being carried out in the Research Institute on rice, maize, soybean, vegetables and citrus. The use of farm machinery for weed control in general will also be discussed.
