The Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service is now providing internet links direct to Indiana county extension offices. The Purdue Agricultural Computer Network (ACN) has developed a software package that provides transparent TCP/IP routing to remotely located computers. This approach incorporates full internet functionality, allowing services such as telnet FTP, Gopher, and Mosaic from the county desktop. We avoid costly leased data circuits by using high speed modems and our software package called Dialup PPP, or simply dp. To date, we have connected about one third of our field offices with this technology. This paper will discuss the details of the hardware and software architecture, as well as provide performance, cost, and usage data. We believe that this is an important technological solution to the lack of internet connectivity in current statewide networks. |
