Correlation and path coefficient analysis in eleven genotypes of watermelon worked out at Vegetable Farm of Bihar Agril. College, Sabour, during summer 1983 indicated that yield per vine positively correlated with number of fruits per vine and total soluble solids at both genotypic and phenotypic levels. The negative association of yield per vine with number of days and node number for the apperance of first female flower indicated that selection for earliness should be based on these traits. The negative association of these two characters with number of fruits per vine also suggests that selection for these characters will help the breeder in selecting a variety with earliness and higher of fruits per vine and higher yield. Path coefficient analysis revealed that maximum weightage should be given to number of fruits per vine and total soluble solids while formulating selection indices for improvement of yield in watermelon. |
