Since 1894 Trypanosomosis due to Trypanosoma evansi "mal de caderas" has been reported in horses in the Nhecolandia sub-region of Pantanal. This disease became a significant limitation to the expansion of the cattle industry in region. This study was carried out from january to july when several cases of trypanosomosis occured in dogs and horses in the Pantanal. Blood samples collected from sick horses (n=130) and dogs (n=4) were examined by micro hematocrit centrifugation techniques and mice inoculation. All dogs and 126 horses (97,01%) were infected with T. evansi. The trypanosomosis outbreaks occured during or just after the tabanid season in the region. This season represents the period of major risk of trypanosome transmission by these insects due their abundance and populational peak of species of high vectorial capacity notably Tabanus importunus. The frequent transit of infected domestic animals through the properties could have contributed to disease spreading by vectors. Otheir risk factors such as the presence of domestics carries (cattle horses and dogs), wild reservoirs (capybaras, coatis and ocelot), local husbandry pratices such as intensive traffic of livestock. The vampire bats appears to play an important role in initiating outbreaks of "mal de caderas" in horses and after an outbreak is initiated the files could be effective vectores to spread the infections. |
