The maintenance of the original vegetation, especially the gallery forests and marsches, is important for ecological integrity of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, as well as protection of soils. Hence, it is important to know not only the degree of integrity of the vegetation, but also the areas originally occupied by these two formations. The objective of the present work was to evaluate the loss of the original areas of gallery forest and marsches of the Gama-Cabeca-de-Veado Protection Area in the Federal District in the period between 1953-92, as well as to estimate their original areas before the anthropic occupation. The work consisted of aerial-photo interpretation and pedological and geomorphological analyses of the area. In addition, automatic satellite image processing was performed, in order to establish correlations. The methodology here developed will be used for other areas of the Cerrado region in the future. |
