Aggregate fractionation and a modified Hedley P fractionation were used to study the effects of land-use (conventional tillage and pasture in comparison to savanna) on bulk soil and macroaggregate fractions of a sandy and a clayey Cerrado Oxisol of Brazil. The size distribution of water-stable aggregates under native Cerrado savanna is similar in the sandy and clayey soil. The large macroaggregate fraction (2-8 mm) is depleted under crop by 75% and 30% in the sandy and the clayey soil, respectively. Large macroaggregates are enriched in organic P relative to bulk soil only in the sandy Oxisol. In the clayey soil total P concentrations are three times higher than in the sandy soil. In both soils the most important P fractions are stable Fe associated inorganic P and organic P in savanna and pasture, but Al associated inorganic P form crops.Tthe absolute concentrations of organic P are higher for crop than for savanna and pasture soils, but the proportion of organic P to plant available P is reduced. After ten years of conventional tillage, aggregation and P status of the clayey Oxisol do not indicate strong degradation as small differences were encountered between the management systems. For the sandy crop a soil organic matter conserving management system is recomended to reduce aggregate disruption and depledtion of formerly protected P fractions. |
