The conceptual model of hysteresis as proposed by Mualem (1974) was used as means of testing the independent domain theory to describe measured primary scanning curves. Three porus materials were used: Boise sandstone, yolo fine sandy loam, and Aiken clay. Water content values at a given capillary presure head were measured using a statc equilibrium method. The applied pressure increment for reaching each point along a specific characteristic curve was equally spaced. Appreciable water evaporation losses were registered and a correction was utilized to obtein the actual water content values. The measured moisture characteristics varied considerably for each poruous material. The area enclosed between boudary curves benig smaller for sandstone than that for the other materials was an indication that the pore geometry and its radial interconnections was simpler for sandstone than for the natural soils. The comparison between predicted measured scanning curves was better for the sandstone than for soils. In general there was a satisfactory agreement between theory and measured data. The mathematical model used is simple to apply and does not require much computation time for its application. |
