The variables examined in the present study of grain loss and seed damage were: humidity measured at different hours on the day of combining and type of cylinder used in the combine. The experiment was conducted in Monte Alegre de Minas, Minas Gerais, Brazil during the crop year 1986/87. Cylinder types experimented included a cylinder with teeth for thrashing out the grain and one with steel bars mounted longitudinally on the cilinder. Losses were measured by collecting the pods and beans scattered on the ground and, separately, the pods and beans left on the plant stumps. Results from a comparison of losses of two types of combines and between hours of combining showed that grom 11:AM to 1:pm the losses from the combine equipped with a toothed cylinder were1.17 percent (insignificantly) above those from the machine with a barred cylinder. Seed damage in terms of cracked and split seeds increased during the day as levels of humidity reduced. It was observed, however, that damage resulting from the toothed cylinder was less. The superior quality of seeds after use of the toothed cylinder was expressed by a higher percentage of normal sprouts, a smaller percentage of necrosis and less soaking. |
