To summarize citriculture's origin in our country, it is necessary to go back to the colonial days (XVIth century), and to keep in mind that the introduction of the first plants occured from the North, by two converging currents towards the Middle South, namely Chile and Peru from the North West, and Paraguay from the North East. The first citrus intriduction in the Northwestern course was specifically in the present provinces of Salta, Jujuy, Tucuman and Santiago del Estero, in 1556, when Hernan Mejia de Miraval brougth orange and lemon seeds from a trip through Chile and Peru, thus developing those ancient plantations wildly. |
